EAS359   Work and Society in Japan   (20 credits)

Description

This module analyses some of the main issues related to work and society in Japan from a comparative and historical perspective. Main issues include: the main characteristics of Japanese employment (such as lifetime employment and the increasing non-regular employment), industrial relations, gender discrimination in the labour market, and globalisation and the change and continuity of Japanese employment. In addition, two prominent social issues in contemporary Japan (`fewer children and work-life balance' and `increasing income inequality and poverty') will be examined.
